Xagó (Gozón) — local surf knowledge
The wave
Xagó is an open, wild stretch of sand in the municipality of Gozón, on the other side of the Avilés estuary from Salinas, backed by a large dune field. It is the beach where the most swell gets in anywhere in Asturias.
- Type of wave: exposed beach break, peaks along the whole beach
- Workable size: it works on very little swell — when San Lorenzo shows 0.4–0.5 m there are already waves here, as long as the period helps. When the other beaches are small, Xagó can be medium or bigger
- Its best day: San Lorenzo around 0.7 m, good period and an offshore wind
- Too big: when San Lorenzo shows 1.4 m it closes out here and becomes unmanageable, even with a good period and wind
Swell direction
- Best: the same as San Lorenzo — NW–NNW arrives clean and ordered
- It also works on a northerly swell; from the east it is sheltered
Period
- 7 s minimum
- From 11 s it works perfectly
Wind
- Offshore (ideal): ESE–SE wind (~125°); the beach points further north-west than San Lorenzo, so its offshore is rotated towards the east
- Onshore (bad): NW–N wind; a completely open beach with no shelter — an onshore messes it up unless it is very light
Tide
- Best on a high tide
- It works on any tide; none of them cancels it out. What kills it is too much size
